MAINCODE Partner

MAINCODE is driven by a powerful team coming from six diverse partners from across Europe.

  • Politecnico di Torino, project coordinator, and University of Southern Denmark, develop strategic urban research to expand on common knowledge about urban climate shelters, combining theoretical, comparative and case-specific research, and supporting upscaling and replicability.
  • Urban Lab Torino and Commonspace Coop take charge as mediators in applying strategic urban research, involving stakeholders in the co-designing process to implement urban climate shelters in schoolyards.
  • City of Torino and City of Halandri serve as a pilot case studies to test how urban climate shelters can have a tangible and applicable impact on actual decisions and policy.

University of Southern Denmark

University of Southern Denmark (SDU) participates in MAINCODE through the efforts of the UNESCO Chair on Urban Resilience, a research group that develops transdisciplinary research, education, and knowledge transfer activities at the international level, focusing on urban resilient transitions, disaster risk reduction, mitigation, and adaptation in urban areas. SDU leads the upscaling process of urban climate shelters, identifying socio-economic and environmental trade-offs, implementation barriers, and providing recommendations for policymakers and practitioners.

Politecnico di Torino

Politecnico di Torino (POLITO) is one of the top technical universities in Europe, known for its transdisciplinary research at the interface of cities and academia in urban sustainability. POLITO is the MAINCODE coordinator and leads the theoretical background and conceptualization of urban climate shelters, as well as the testing and validation of the MAINCODE methodology for their implementation, replication, and upscaling across Europe. Additionally, POLITO supports the DUT Knowledge Hub by coordinating scientific dissemination and outreaching activities.

Commonspace Coop

Commonspace Coop (COMMONSPACE) is a collaborative-interdisciplinary planning and design group specialised in spatial strategies, architecture, social research and urban and environmental design by creating innovative tools and processes. COMMONSPACE supports the transformation of urban climate shelters in the selected Halandri schoolyard, leading the implementation process, providing comprehensive vulnerability maps for Turin and Halandri and developing the MAINCODE tales for the communities.

Urban Lab Torino

Urban Lab Torino (ULAB) is a non-profit association founded in 2005 by the City of Turin and Compagnia di San Paolo bank foundation. ULAB’s mission is to narrate the transformation of Turin and its metropolitan area, creating a space where economic, social and cultural players can discuss and actively participate in Turin’s ongoing transformation. ULAB supports the transformation of urban climate shelters in the selected Turin schoolyard, leading the co-design process of MAINCODE Future Workshops and providing toolkits for schools and children.

City of Halandri

The City of Halandri is the largest municipality in the North Athens Regional Unit of Attica and, following the economic crisis, has developed recovery policies focused on revitalizing the local economy while increasingly paying attention to environmental conditions. The Halandri’s role in MAINCODE is to support the implementation of urban climate shelters in a selected city school, contributing to the transformation and facilitating the upscaling process.

City of Turin

The City of Turin is the fourth largest city in Italy and it has been following a path that has transformed it from an industrial capital into a hub of innovation and culture since the 1990’s. Turin has been recognised as one of the 100 climate-neutral and smart cities, and is now actively shaping its sustainable and resilient future toward 2030. The Turin’s role in MAINCODE is to support the implementation of urban climate shelters in a selected city school, contributing to the transformation and facilitating the upscaling process.
